This study investigates the influence of social media usage on the creative writing abilities of college students in colleges of education in Southwest Nigeria. With the proliferation of social media platforms and their integration into daily life, particularly among Nigerian youth, understanding their impact on creative writing skills is crucial. Despite the growing prevalence of social media usage, empirical research specifically examining its influence on creative writing remains limited, especially within the Nigerian context. Therefore, this study aims to address this research gap by employing a quantitative analysis approach.

The research focuses on assessing the frequency and extent of social media usage among college students, examining the relationship between social media usage patterns and creative writing abilities, identifying the types of social media platforms most commonly utilized, and exploring students’ perceptions and attitudes towards the role of social media in shaping their creative writing practices. The study hypothesizes that there is no significant relationship between the frequency and duration of social media usage, no significant correlation between social media usage and creative writing abilities, no significant difference in the influence of various social media platforms on creative writing skills, and no significant difference in students’ perceptions of social media’s impact on their writing practices.

Data for this study will be collected through surveys and standardized assessments administered to college students enrolled in colleges of education in Southwest Nigeria. Statistical analysis techniques will be employed to analyze the data and test the hypotheses formulated. The findings of this study are expected to provide valuable insights into the complex relationship between social media engagement and creative writing proficiency among college students in Southwest Nigeria, informing educational practice, policy-making, and future research endeavors in the field of digital literacy and education.
