Effects of Teenage Pregnancy on Girls’ Emotional Behaviour and Academic Performance

Teenage pregnancy remains a global concern with significant implications for individuals, families, and communities. This study investigates the effects of teenage pregnancy on girls’ emotional behavior and academic performance in secondary schools within the Ijebu-Ode Local Government Area of Ogun State, Nigeria. Drawing on a descriptive research design, data were collected from 94 girls and school counselors using questionnaires and interview schedules. Findings reveal that educators perceive teenage pregnancy as affecting school attendance rates and emotional behavior, with pregnant teenagers facing challenges in academic performance. The study underscores the importance of addressing teenage pregnancy to enhance educational outcomes and promote the well-being of affected individuals. Recommendations are provided for policymakers, educators, and health professionals to mitigate the adverse effects of teenage pregnancy on girls’ academic and emotional development.
