The persistent industrial conflicts between the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) and the Federal Government of Nigeria (FGN) have led to numerous strikes, disrupting academic programs and affecting the academic performance of university students. This study investigates the effects of ASUU strikes on students’ academic performance, focusing on the period from 2009 to 2023. Using a combination of historical and survey methods, data was collected from representatives of students, university management, parents, state representatives, and ASUU members. A total of 90 respondents from two universities, Tai Solarin University of Education and the University of Ibadan, were sampled. Questionnaires were administered, and responses were analyzed using hypothesis testing techniques, tables, pie charts, and simple percentages. Findings reveal that disruptions in academic programs due to ASUU strikes significantly impact students’ learning effectiveness, study habits, and academic performance. Moreover, the strikes contribute to emotional and psychological instability among students, leading to decreased motivation and engagement in academic activities. The study underscores the need for effective conflict resolution mechanisms and highlights the detrimental effects of industrial disputes on the quality of higher education in Nigeria. Recommendations include proactive measures to address the root causes of industrial conflicts and foster a conducive learning environment for students.
