Why the Military Should Be Involved in Community Security

The military plays an important role in maintaining national security. However, their involvement in community security is crucial in several situations, especially in times of crisis, war, or civil unrest. Their presence in communities can provide safety and restore peace when needed.

  • Roles of the Military in Community Security
    1. Peacekeeping: The military can help to maintain peace by providing support during times of civil unrest, riots, or conflict. They work alongside local law enforcement to keep the community safe.
    2. Disaster Relief: In times of natural disasters like floods or earthquakes, the military can assist with rescue operations, providing food, water, and medical care to the affected people.
    3. Crime Prevention: The military can be called upon to help combat serious crimes such as terrorism, armed robbery, or human trafficking. They can work with police officers to patrol dangerous areas and deter criminal activities.
    4. Border Protection: The military helps protect national borders and ensures that illegal activities such as smuggling or human trafficking do not affect the community.
  • Benefits of Military Involvement in Community Security
    1. Enhanced Safety: The military can provide additional security forces, which can make the community safer. Their training and equipment allow them to handle situations that law enforcement might struggle with.
    2. Faster Response: The military is well-prepared for emergencies and can respond quickly to natural disasters or security threats, ensuring that communities receive the help they need without delay.
    3. Building Trust: When the military is involved in helping communities, they build trust with citizens. This relationship fosters cooperation between civilians, local authorities, and military personnel, ensuring a peaceful environment.
  • Ways the Military Can Work With the Community
    1. Collaboration with Local Authorities: The military works with the police, local government, and other organizations to address security concerns and provide necessary resources during emergencies.
    2. Community Outreach: The military can engage in activities that promote understanding and support for their role in the community, such as public education campaigns about safety and security.
    3. Training and Support: Military personnel can train local law enforcement in techniques for maintaining security, as well as offer support in times of heightened threats or emergencies.

Lesson Presentation

Step 1: Introduction
Ask the pupils:

  • “What do you think the military does to keep us safe?”
  • “Can the military help protect communities, or should they just focus on national security?”
Show pictures or video clips of the military working with local authorities and discuss the importance of their role in keeping people safe, especially in times of crisis.

Step 2: Explanation
Explain the key roles of the military in community security. Discuss how their training and resources make them effective in times of emergencies, such as natural disasters or social unrest, and how they work with the community to maintain peace and safety.

Step 3: Demonstration
Show a short video or provide a real-life example where the military helped maintain peace and security in a local community (e.g., soldiers assisting in flood relief efforts, or military patrols in a community experiencing civil unrest). Ask the pupils what they think the military’s role was in the situation.

Step 4: Guided Practice
Ask the class to brainstorm other ways the military could help with community security. Write their responses on the board and discuss how each action helps promote safety and peace. Encourage pupils to think about how military personnel and the community can collaborate for mutual benefit.

Step 5: Independent Practice
Have the pupils work in pairs to create a list of possible security challenges that their community might face (e.g., crime, disaster, civil unrest) and propose how the military could help resolve each issue. Encourage them to think about both peacekeeping and emergency responses.

Step 6: Feedback
Review the lists of proposed security challenges and solutions, offering feedback on the pupils’ ideas. Encourage them to think critically about how different agencies (the military, police, and community members) can work together to maintain safety.

Evaluation

Formative Assessment:
As the pupils discuss the roles of the military in community security, observe their understanding of how military involvement can benefit society. Ask questions like, “Why do you think the military should help during a disaster?” or “What are some ways the military can keep our community safe?”

Summative Assessment:
At the end of the lesson, ask the pupils to write a paragraph on why it is important for the military to be involved in community security. They should highlight at least two reasons and provide examples of how the military can help.

Summary/Conclusion

The military plays a vital role in maintaining security not only at the national level but also within local communities. Their involvement can help prevent crime, provide disaster relief, and promote peace and safety. Working together with local authorities and the community ensures a safer environment for everyone.

Assignment

Ask pupils to draw a picture of the military helping in their community. They should include things like soldiers helping during a disaster or patrolling the streets with the police. Write a brief description of the scene and explain how the military is contributing to the security of their community.
