Posted on October 15, 2024October 15, 2024 By Damilola

Lesson Plan for Primary Five (Age 10)

Subject: Basic Science
Class: Primary Five
Week of the First Term: 8th Week
Topic: Waste and Waste Disposal
Sub-Topic: (i) Methods of Waste Disposal (ii) Different Ways of Recycling Waste and the Advantages of Recycling Waste

Instructional Objectives

At the end of the lesson, pupils should be able to:

  1. Identify and describe various methods of waste disposal.
  2. Explain different ways to recycle waste and the benefits of each method.
  3. Demonstrate how to sort waste for recycling through a hands-on activity.

Entry Behaviour

Pupils should already have a basic understanding of what waste is and the effects of waste on the environment from previous lessons.

Instructional Materials

  1. Textbook: Basic Science and Technology Primary Bk 5
  2. Visual aids: Charts or images depicting different methods of waste disposal and recycling processes
  3. Flashcards: Pictures of recyclable materials and waste disposal methods for identification and discussion

Methods of Waste Disposal:

  • Landfill: Waste is buried in the ground and covered with soil. This method helps to keep the environment clean but can take up a lot of space.
  • Incineration: Waste is burned at high temperatures to reduce its volume. This method can generate energy but may produce air pollution if not managed properly.
  • Composting: Organic waste (like food scraps and garden waste) is broken down into useful compost for soil enrichment. This method is eco-friendly and reduces the amount of waste sent to landfills.

Different Ways of Recycling Waste:

  • Paper Recycling: Old paper is collected, processed, and made into new paper products. This reduces the need for raw materials and helps conserve trees.
  • Plastic Recycling: Plastic bottles and containers are cleaned, shredded, and turned into new plastic products or materials. This helps reduce plastic waste in landfills and oceans.
  • Metal Recycling: Aluminum cans and metal scraps are melted down and reformed into new metal items. This conserves natural resources and reduces the energy needed to produce new metals.

Advantages of Recycling Waste:

  • Reduces Pollution: Recycling helps decrease the pollution caused by waste disposal and conserves natural resources.
  • Saves Energy: Recycling often uses less energy compared to producing new products from raw materials.
  • Conserves Resources: Recycling helps conserve resources like timber, water, and minerals, which are used to make new products.
  • Reduced Pollution: Recycling decreases pollution by reducing the need for raw material extraction and processing, which can lead to air and water pollution
  • Decreased Landfill Use: Recycling reduces the amount of waste sent to landfills and incinerators, helping to extend the lifespan of existing landfills and reduce the need for new ones
  • Lower Water Usage: Recycling processes often require less water compared to the production of new materials, helping to conserve water resources.
