Subject: Practical Life Exercise
Topic: Washing Hands After Using the Toilet


General Objectives

By the end of the lesson, pupils should be able to:

  1. Identify the materials used for washing hands.
  2. Demonstrate the correct technique for washing hands after using the toilet.
  3. Understand the importance of washing hands to maintain good hygiene.

Materials

  • Soap (preferably liquid soap)
  • Water (in a bowl or through a tap, if available)
  • Towels or tissue paper
  • Visual aid (picture of clean and dirty hands)

Previous Knowledge

Pupils have seen adults or older children washing their hands after using the toilet or before eating.


Lesson Procedure

Introduction

  • Objective: Introduce the topic of handwashing after using the toilet and its importance in preventing illness.
  • Method:
    1. Ask the pupils if they know why it is important to wash hands after using the toilet.
    2. Explain that hands carry germs after using the toilet and washing them keeps them clean and healthy.

Step 1: Identifying Handwashing Materials

  • Objective: Teach pupils to recognize the materials used for washing hands.
  • Method:
    1. Show the pupils soap, water, and towels.
    2. Ask them what each item is used for (e.g., soap to clean, water to rinse, towel to dry).

Step 2: Demonstrating Proper Handwashing Technique

  • Objective: Teach pupils the correct method of washing hands.
  • Method:
    1. Wet hands with clean water.
    2. Apply soap and rub hands together to make bubbles.
    3. Scrub all parts of the hands (front, back, between fingers, under nails) for at least 20 seconds.
    4. Rinse hands with clean water.
    5. Dry hands with a towel or tissue paper.
