Underdevelopment Due to Ethnic Conflict, Waste of Manpower and Resources

1. Underdevelopment Due to Ethnic Conflict

Ethnic conflicts in Nigeria, such as violence between different ethnic groups, can cause major problems for the country’s development. When ethnic groups fight, resources like money, land, and energy that could have been used for building schools, hospitals, or roads are wasted. Instead of working together to improve the country, people are distracted by fighting and trying to protect their own group.

For example, instead of building better homes or schools, the government and people have to spend money on fixing the damage caused by violence. Ethnic conflicts also stop businesses from growing because they are worried about their safety. When businesses don’t grow, people lose their jobs, and it becomes harder for families to make a living.

When different groups fight, it can also stop people from learning new skills or getting the education they need. This leads to fewer people being able to contribute to the country’s growth, which keeps the country from developing and becoming stronger.

2. Waste of Manpower and Resources

Ethnic conflict also causes a waste of manpower and resources. Manpower means the people who can work and do jobs that help the country grow. But when there is fighting, many people are not able to work or use their skills. For example, people might leave their jobs or farms to join a fight, or they might be too scared to go to work because of the violence.

When people stop working, the country loses their skills and talents. This waste of manpower can slow down the development of the country because fewer people are helping to build new things or make important decisions.

Resources, such as money, land, and tools, are also wasted in ethnic conflicts. Money that could be used to improve education, healthcare, or infrastructure is spent on repairing damage caused by violence. Land that could be used to grow food or build houses becomes dangerous, so people cannot use it effectively.

Lesson Presentation (Step-by-Step Procedure)

Step 1: Introduction
Ask the pupils the following questions to stimulate thinking:

  • “Can you imagine how a country would grow if there were constant fights between groups? What happens to a country when people are fighting instead of working together?”
  • “What do you think happens when a country spends all its money on war or fixing damage caused by fighting?”

This will help pupils relate to the consequences of ethnic conflict.

Step 2: Explanation

  • Underdevelopment Due to Ethnic Conflict:
Explain that when ethnic groups are in conflict, resources that could have been used to build schools, hospitals, roads, and other important things are instead used for war or to rebuild after fighting. This slows down the countryโ€™s development and makes it harder for everyone to live a good life.
Use a real-world example of a region in Nigeria that has faced ethnic conflict, such as the Niger Delta, where oil-rich areas have been affected by ethnic violence and its consequences on development.
  • Waste of Manpower and Resources:
Explain that ethnic conflicts cause people to leave their homes and work, which wastes the skills and knowledge they have. For example, teachers, doctors, and farmers may have to leave their jobs to flee fighting. This leaves the country with fewer people to do important work.
Show a chart or flashcards with pictures representing lost resources, such as damaged schools, hospitals, or abandoned businesses, and explain how these wasted resources could have been used to improve lives in Nigeria.

Step 3: Demonstration
Use flashcards with images of affected regions to illustrate how ethnic conflict has led to the destruction of infrastructure and the displacement of people. Explain the concept of underdevelopment and waste using the visual aids.

Step 4: Guided Practice
Ask the pupils to work in groups to discuss:

  • “How does ethnic conflict stop people from building a better society?”
  • “How does wasting resources during a conflict hurt the country in the long term?”
Encourage pupils to think about how conflicts they might know of in the news or history have hurt Nigeriaโ€™s development.

Step 5: Independent Practice
Provide pupils with a worksheet that asks them to:

  1. Define underdevelopment and explain how ethnic conflict causes it.
  2. Give examples of manpower or resources that are wasted because of ethnic conflict.
  3. Explain how Nigeriaโ€™s growth is affected when people fight over ethnic issues instead of working together.

Step 6: Feedback
Go over the worksheet with the class, offering feedback on the answers and addressing any misunderstandings. Reinforce the lessonโ€™s main points by providing clear explanations.

Evaluation

Formative Assessment:
Evaluate pupilsโ€™ understanding by observing their contributions during group discussions and by assessing their responses to the worksheet. Provide feedback as they explain the consequences of ethnic conflict on national development.

Summative Assessment:
At the end of the lesson, assess pupilsโ€™ understanding through a quiz or short oral examination where they must explain the effects of ethnic conflict on development and resources in Nigeria.

Summary/Conclusion

Today, we learned that ethnic conflict in Nigeria leads to underdevelopment by diverting resources from important projects like education, healthcare, and infrastructure. We also learned that ethnic conflict wastes valuable manpower, as people are forced to leave their jobs and homes. This slows down the nationโ€™s progress and affects the lives of its citizens.

Assignment

Write a short essay on the effects of ethnic conflict on Nigeriaโ€™s development. Discuss how it wastes resources and makes it harder for the country to grow. Include one example of a region or community that has suffered due to ethnic conflict.
