Subject: Social Studies
Class: Primary Five
Week of the First Term: 8th Week
Topic: Problems of Parenthood
Sub-Topic: (i) Meaning of STIs/STDs/AIDS (ii) Types of STDs (iii) Effects of STDs/HIV/AIDS (iv) Responsible Sexual Behavior

Instructional Objectives
At the end of the lesson, pupils should be able to:

  1. Define STIs, STDs, and AIDS, and understand their differences.
  2. Identify and describe various types of STDs and their effects on health.
  3. Explain the importance of responsible sexual behavior and ways to prevent STDs and HIV/AIDS.

Entry Behaviour
Pupils should already know:

  • Basic knowledge about health and hygiene.
  • General understanding of diseases and how they affect the body.

Instructional Materials

  1. Textbook: Learn Social Studies Primary Book 5
  2. Visual aids: Charts illustrating different STDs and their effects, and prevention methods.
  3. Flashcards: Definitions and key facts about STDs, HIV/AIDS, and responsible sexual behavior.

Content

  1. Meaning of STIs/STDs/AIDS:
    • STIs (Sexually Transmitted Infections): Infections spread primarily through sexual contact.
    • STDs (Sexually Transmitted Diseases): Diseases caused by infections that are spread through sexual contact.
    • AIDS (Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome): A serious condition caused by HIV (Human Immunodeficiency Virus) that weakens the immune system.
  2. Types of STDs:
    • Chlamydia: Often causes pain during urination and abnormal discharge.
    • Gonorrhea: Can cause pain in the lower abdomen and unusual discharge.
    • Syphilis: Can cause sores and rashes.
    • HIV/AIDS: Weakens the immune system and can lead to serious infections.
  3. Effects of STDs/HIV/AIDS:
    • Physical effects include pain, discomfort, serious health complications, Stigma.
    • Emotional and social effects include stigma, anxiety, relationship issues, Healthcare System Burden, Loss of Productivity.
  4. Responsible Sexual Behavior:
    • Abstinence: Choosing not to engage in sexual activity.
    • Safe Practices: Using protection such as condoms to reduce the risk of STDs.
    • Regular Health Check-ups: Visiting a healthcare provider for routine screenings.
    • Open Communication: Discussing sexual health and practices with partners.
