Week of the First Term: 8th Week
Topic: Preservation of Oil Crops
Sub-Topic: Identifying Oil Crops and Describing Their Preservation

Instructional Objectives

At the end of the lesson, pupils should be able to:

  1. Identify and describe the characteristics of various oil crops such as soya bean, oil palm, groundnut, melon, and coconut.
  2. Explain the methods used to preserve each type of oil crop, highlighting their importance in maintaining crop quality.
  3. Demonstrate how to properly store or preserve oil crops using practical examples and visual aids.

Entry Behaviour

Pupils should already have a basic understanding of different types of crops and their uses from previous lessons. They should be familiar with basic concepts of crop preservation and storage.

Instructional Materials

  1. Textbook: Basic Agricultural Science for Primary Schools Book 6
  2. Visual aids: Charts or pictures of oil crops (soya bean, oil palm, groundnut, melon, coconut).
  3. Samples of oil crops (or images if samples are not available) for hands-on identification.

Preservation of Oil Crops:

  1. Soya Bean:
    • Description: A leguminous crop used for oil extraction and as a protein source.
    • Preservation Methods: Can be preserved by storing in airtight containers to prevent moisture and pest damage. Soya beans are also often roasted or processed into oil.
  2. Oil Palm:
    • Description: A tropical tree that produces palm oil used in cooking and industry.
    • Preservation Methods: Palm oil is preserved by refining, cooling, and storing in sealed containers to prevent oxidation. The fruit can be stored in cool, dry conditions.
  3. Groundnut (Peanut):
    • Description: A legume grown for its oil and edible seeds.
    • Preservation Methods: Groundnuts are preserved by drying them thoroughly and storing in a cool, dry place in airtight containers. They can also be roasted or processed into peanut oil.
  4. Melon:
    • Description: A fruit with oil-rich seeds used for oil extraction.
    • Preservation Methods: Melon seeds are dried and stored in airtight containers to prevent spoilage. The seeds can be processed into oil or stored for planting.
  5. Coconut:
    • Description: A tropical fruit known for its oil-rich flesh and milk.
    • Preservation Methods: Coconuts are preserved by drying the copra (dried coconut meat) and storing it in a cool, dry place. Coconut oil is extracted and stored in sealed containers.
