Objectives

At the end of the lesson, pupils should be able to:

  1. List methods of purifying water, such as boiling and filtering.
  2. Describe each method and explain how it helps remove contaminants.
  3. Discuss the importance of drinking clean, safe water to maintain good health.

Entry Behaviour

Pupils should already understand the dangers of drinking contaminated water and have basic knowledge of common contaminants.

Methods of Purifying Water (e.g., Boiling, Filtering), Importance of Clean, Safe Water

1. Methods of Purifying Water

There are several ways to purify water, each suited for different types of contaminants. The most common methods of purifying water are boiling and filtering.

a. Boiling Water

Boiling water is one of the simplest and most effective ways to purify it. When water is boiled, it reaches a high temperature that kills most harmful microorganisms, including bacteria, viruses, and parasites. Boiling also helps to remove some harmful chemicals and particles from water.

b. Filtering Water

Filtering is another effective method of purifying water. Water filters are devices that remove impurities, such as dirt, sand, chemicals, and microorganisms, from the water. There are different types of filters, and they use different technologies to clean water.

c. Other Water Purification Methods

Besides boiling and filtering, there are other methods used to purify water, such as:

  • Chlorination: Adding chlorine to water is a common method used in large-scale water purification systems. Chlorine kills bacteria and viruses in the water.
  • UV Purification: Ultraviolet (UV) light can be used to kill harmful microorganisms in water. It damages the DNA of bacteria, viruses, and parasites, preventing them from reproducing and causing disease.

2. Importance of Clean, Safe Water

Clean, safe water is essential for good health and well-being. Water that is free of harmful contaminants prevents many diseases and supports daily life. Here are some reasons why clean, safe water is so important:

a. Prevention of Waterborne Diseases

Drinking contaminated water is one of the leading causes of illness worldwide. Waterborne diseases, such as cholera, dysentery, typhoid, and hepatitis, are caused by harmful bacteria, viruses, and parasites in unclean water. Consuming contaminated water can lead to stomach problems, dehydration, and even death if not treated. By ensuring water is clean and safe, we can prevent these diseases and keep our bodies healthy.

b. Supports Growth and Development

Clean water is essential for healthy growth, especially in children. Proper hydration supports brain development, physical growth, and overall health. Water also helps the body process food, carry nutrients to cells, and remove waste. Drinking safe water is essential for children to grow strong, healthy, and smart.

c. Maintaining Hygiene and Sanitation

Water is vital for daily activities such as bathing, cleaning, cooking, and washing. Having access to clean water ensures that we can maintain proper hygiene and sanitation, reducing the spread of infections and keeping homes and communities clean. Clean water also helps in food preparation, ensuring that meals are cooked properly and safely.

d. Promotes Better Nutrition

In addition to hydration, clean water helps the body absorb nutrients from food. Drinking clean water during meals helps the body digest food more efficiently and ensures that the nutrients from food are properly absorbed. Poor-quality water can interfere with the body’s ability to process food and can lead to malnutrition.

e. Ensures Safe Water for Agriculture

Clean water is not only important for drinking but also for farming and livestock. Water is used for irrigation, washing produce, and providing hydration to animals. Contaminated water can affect the quality of crops and cause diseases in livestock, which can harm the food supply.

Lesson Presentation (Step-by-Step Procedure)

Step 1: Introduction
Ask pupils why they think clean water is necessary and how they think water can be made safe. Build curiosity by discussing their ideas.

Step 2: Explanation
Explain the need to purify water to remove harmful substances. Introduce the methods: boiling, filtering, and using chlorine.

Step 3: Demonstration
Demonstrate boiling water (explain if using a kettle), and show a simple water filter setup if available. Use flashcards or posters to illustrate each method of water purification.

Step 4: Guided Practice
Guide pupils in identifying the purification methods by discussing each and asking them how they think each method removes contaminants.

Step 5: Independent Practice
Have pupils write down two methods of purifying water and why each is useful.

Step 6: Feedback
Review the pupils’ answers, correct any misconceptions, and reinforce the importance of each method.

Evaluation

  • Formative Assessment: During the demonstration, ask pupils to identify and describe each purification method to check for understanding.
  • Summative Assessment: At the end of the lesson, pupils should be able to list methods of purifying water and explain why clean water is important.

Summary/Conclusion

Summarize the lesson by emphasizing that purified water is essential for good health, and there are simple ways to ensure water is clean, like boiling and filtering.

Assignment

Ask pupils to discuss with a family member which method they use at home to purify water and to bring back a brief description of it.
