Week Eight
Subject: Physical and Health Education
Class: Primary Three
Week of the Third Term: 8th Week
Topic: Environmental Health – Part 2
Subtopic: Meaning of Noise, Air, Water, and Chemical Pollution, Causes of Pollution, Ways of Preventing Pollution
Instructional Objectives
At the end of the lesson, pupils should be able to:
- Define noise, air, water, and chemical pollution, and describe their causes.
- Identify the ways in which pollution can be prevented.
- Discuss the importance of protecting the environment to ensure good health for all.
Entry Behaviour
Pupils should already understand the general concept of pollution and its effects on health from the previous lesson on environmental health.
Instructional Materials
- Flashcards with images of pollution types (air, water, noise, chemical).
- A video clip or images showing pollution and its causes.
- Visual aids depicting pollution prevention measures (e.g., waste disposal, reducing car emissions).

Content
What is Pollution?
Pollution refers to the presence of harmful substances in our environment that can damage it and affect the health of living organisms. The main types of pollution are noise, air, water, and chemical pollution.
Noise Pollution:
Noise pollution is the presence of loud or disturbing sounds in the environment.
- Causes: Traffic, loud music, industrial machines, construction work.
- Effects: Hearing loss, sleep disturbance, increased stress levels, high blood pressure.
Air Pollution:
Air pollution happens when harmful gases or particles are released into the air, making it unhealthy to breathe.
- Causes: Car emissions, burning of waste, industrial activities, smoke from factories.
- Effects: Respiratory problems, asthma, lung infections, heart disease.
Water Pollution:
Water pollution is the contamination of water bodies (like rivers, lakes, and oceans) with harmful substances that make the water unsafe to use.
- Causes: Industrial waste, sewage, agricultural runoff, plastic waste.
- Effects: Waterborne diseases (like cholera, diarrhea), death of aquatic life, harm to crops.
Chemical Pollution:
Chemical pollution happens when harmful chemicals such as pesticides, fertilizers, or factory waste are released into the air, water, or soil.
- Causes: Industrial waste, improper disposal of chemicals, pesticide use in farming.
- Effects: Poisoning, cancer, skin disorders, death of plants and animals.
Ways of Preventing Pollution:
There are several actions we can take to reduce pollution and protect our environment:
- Reducing Waste: Recycle, reuse, and reduce waste to avoid it from being thrown into the environment.
- Proper Waste Disposal: Dispose of garbage and industrial waste in the correct places, such as waste bins or recycling centers.
- Reducing Car Emissions: Walk, bike, or use public transport instead of driving to reduce air pollution.
- Planting Trees: Trees help clean the air and reduce pollution by absorbing carbon dioxide.
- Conserving Water: Avoid wasting water to keep our water sources clean and healthy.
- Using Eco-friendly Products: Use products that are biodegradable or recyclable to prevent harmful chemicals from polluting the environment.
Lesson Presentation (Step-by-Step Procedure)
Step 1: Introduction
Begin with a question to engage the pupils: “Can you think of a time when you heard a loud noise that disturbed you? What happened?” Discuss their answers and introduce the topic of pollution, specifically focusing on the four types (noise, air, water, and chemical). Show pictures of polluted environments and ask the pupils to identify which type of pollution they see.
Step 2: Explanation
Explain each type of pollution (noise, air, water, and chemical) clearly and simply, with examples. Use visuals to help pupils connect the definitions with real-world situations.
- For noise pollution, show pictures of a busy road or construction site.
- For air pollution, show images of smoke or smog.
- For water pollution, show dirty rivers or plastic waste in the ocean.
- For chemical pollution, show images of factory waste or pesticides being sprayed on crops.
Step 3: Demonstration
Use a short video or animation that shows the effects of pollution and its causes. The video should explain how pollution happens and demonstrate its harmful effects on both humans and the environment.
Step 4: Guided Practice
In groups, ask pupils to come up with one example of each type of pollution they have seen in their community. Have them draw pictures of what they’ve seen and share their findings with the class. Discuss the causes and effects of each pollution type.
Step 5: Independent Practice
Ask pupils to think about their daily habits. Write or draw one way they can help prevent each type of pollution. For example, they might say, “I will turn off the lights when I leave the room to reduce electricity use and reduce air pollution” or “I will throw trash in the bin to prevent water pollution.”
Step 6: Feedback
Provide feedback on their answers and reinforce correct behaviors. Praise pupils who identify creative ways of reducing pollution and help those who may need further clarification. Encourage pupils to think about other ways they can protect the environment, both at school and at home.
Evaluation
Formative Assessment:
As the pupils work on their group drawings and write or draw about pollution prevention, observe their understanding. Ask questions such as:
- “What are the causes of noise pollution?”
- “How can we prevent water pollution in our community?”
Assess their participation and accuracy in identifying pollution types and prevention methods.
Summative Assessment:
At the end of the lesson, conduct a quiz with the following questions:
- What is noise pollution? Name one cause and one effect.
- Name one way to reduce air pollution.
- What is the effect of water pollution on humans?
- List two ways to prevent chemical pollution.
Summary/Conclusion
Summarize the lesson by reviewing the four types of pollution (noise, air, water, chemical), their causes, and how they affect health and the environment. Emphasize the importance of pollution prevention and encourage pupils to take actions to protect their surroundings.
Assignment
Ask pupils to write a short paragraph or draw pictures showing how they can reduce pollution in their school or home. Encourage them to think of practical actions, such as using a waste bin, turning off lights, or cleaning up litter.
