Content

Balance Diet:
A balanced diet is a meal that contains all the necessary food groups in the right proportions to maintain good health. The food groups are:

  1. Carbohydrates (energy-giving foods) – Examples: rice, yam, bread.
  2. Proteins (body-building foods) – Examples: beans, eggs, fish.
  3. Fats and Oils – Examples: palm oil, butter, avocado.
  4. Vitamins and Minerals – Examples: fruits, vegetables, milk.
  5. Water – Essential for hydration and digestion.

Importance of a Balanced Diet:

  • Growth: Provides nutrients needed for body growth and development.
  • Energy: Gives the body energy to work and play.
  • Prevention of Illness: Helps prevent diseases by keeping the body healthy and strong.

Lesson Presentation (Step-by-Step Procedure)

Step 1: Introduction
Begin with a question: “What do you eat every day to stay healthy?” Show a picture of a person looking weak and tired and ask, “Why do you think this person looks weak?” Engage pupils in a discussion on how food affects health.

Step 2: Explanation
Define a balanced diet and explain that it is a diet that contains the right amounts of different food groups. Show a chart with pictures of various foods, categorizing them into the five main food groups.

Step 3: Demonstration
Using flashcards, show different food items and ask the pupils to identify which food group each belongs to. Use a plate model to demonstrate how to arrange food in a balanced way, showing the proportions of each food group.

Step 4: Guided Practice
Provide pupils with a set of food flashcards and ask them to categorize each food item into its correct group. Walk around to assist and correct any mistakes.

Step 5: Independent Practice
Give each pupil a blank plate and ask them to draw a balanced meal. They should include examples of food from each of the five food groups.

Step 6: Feedback
Review each pupil’s drawing and offer feedback. Ask some pupils to explain why they chose certain foods for their meal. Correct any misconceptions and encourage peer-to-peer learning.

Evaluation

Formative Assessment:

  • Observe pupils during guided and independent practice, providing immediate feedback as needed.
  • Ask questions like, “Can you name a food that helps us grow?” or “What is the main job of carbohydrates?” to assess understanding during the lesson.

Summative Assessment:
At the end of the lesson, ask pupils to complete a worksheet where they match foods to the correct food group and explain the importance of a balanced diet.

Summary/Conclusion

Summarize the key points:

  • A balanced diet is essential for health and includes all five food groups in the right amounts.
  • It provides energy, promotes growth, and helps prevent illness.
Encourage pupils to eat a balanced diet daily for good health.

Assignment

For homework, ask pupils to write a short paragraph on why it is important to eat a balanced diet, using examples of foods from each group.
