Week Four
Subject: CCA
Class: Primary Five
Week of the Second Term: 4th Week
Topic: Materials for Mosaic
Subtopic: Listing Materials Used for Mosaic Production
Instructional Objectives
At the end of the lesson, pupils should be able to:
- Identify and list at least five different materials used for making mosaics.
- Explain the importance of each material in the mosaic-making process.
- Select appropriate materials to create their own mosaic design in a practical activity.
Entry Behaviour
Pupils should already know what a mosaic is and have a basic understanding of different artistic materials used in crafting.

Materials Used for Mosaic Production
Mosaic art involves the assembly of various materials to create intricate patterns and images. The choice of materials can significantly impact the final aesthetic and durability of the mosaic.
Materials used in mosaic production.
1. Tesserae
- Glass:
- Characteristics: Available in a wide range of colors, textures, and transparency levels; can be opaque, transparent, or iridescent.
- Uses: Frequently used in both artistic and functional mosaics, especially in decorative wall and floor applications.
- Ceramic Tiles:
- Characteristics: Often pre-glazed and available in various colors and patterns; durable and easy to work with.
- Uses: Commonly used for home decor, garden art, and commercial installations.
- Stone:
- Characteristics: Natural stones like marble, granite, and slate are durable and add an earthy quality to mosaics.
- Uses: Used in classical mosaics, floor designs, and outdoor installations due to their strength and longevity.
- Concrete:
- Characteristics: Can be poured into molds to create custom shapes and textures; often used for larger installations.
- Uses: Common in modern mosaics and outdoor projects, providing structural support and a unique aesthetic.
- Wood:
- Characteristics: Lightweight and versatile, can be cut into various shapes and sizes; often painted or stained.
- Uses: Used in decorative mosaics, particularly in mixed media art pieces.
2. Backing Materials
- Cement Board:
- Characteristics: Provides a stable and moisture-resistant surface for attaching tesserae.
- Uses: Commonly used for floor and wall mosaics.
- Wood Panels:
- Characteristics: Lightweight and easy to work with; can warp in humid conditions if not treated.
- Uses: Often used for smaller mosaics or indoor projects.
- Mesh or Fabric:
- Characteristics: Flexible and easy to handle; tesserae can be glued onto mesh for easier placement.
- Uses: Used for intricate designs and larger mosaics, allowing for easier transport and installation.
3. Adhesives
- Thin-Set Mortar:
- Characteristics: A cement-based adhesive used for attaching heavy materials like stone and ceramic tiles.
- Uses: Ideal for outdoor and high-traffic mosaics due to its durability.
- PVA Glue (Polyvinyl Acetate):
- Characteristics: Water-soluble and non-toxic; suitable for lighter materials like paper and thin glass.
- Uses: Often used for indoor projects and smaller mosaics.
- Epoxy Adhesives:
- Characteristics: Two-part adhesives that create a strong bond; resistant to moisture and chemicals.
- Uses: Used in both indoor and outdoor applications, especially where a strong bond is required.
4. Grout
- Cement Grout:
- Characteristics: Available in various colors and textures; fills gaps between tesserae and provides stability.
- Uses: Commonly used in traditional mosaics, suitable for both indoor and outdoor applications.
- Epoxy Grout:
- Characteristics: Highly durable and stain-resistant; ideal for high-traffic areas.
- Uses: Often used in commercial installations or areas exposed to moisture, like bathrooms and kitchens.
5. Finishing Materials
- Sealants:
- Characteristics: Protect the surface of the mosaic from moisture, stains, and wear.
- Uses: Applied to both the grout and tesserae to enhance durability and maintain appearance.
- Polish:
- Characteristics: Used to enhance the shine and appearance of glass or stone tesserae.
- Uses: Commonly applied to finished mosaics for decorative effects.
