Week Six

Subject: Basic Technology
Class: Primary Two
Week of the Third Term: 6th Week
Topic: Making Maracas I
Subtopic: Creating the Neck of the Maracas

Objectives

At the end of the lesson, pupils should be able to:

  1. Identify the materials needed to create the neck of the maracas.
  2. Demonstrate the process of constructing the neck of the maracas using appropriate techniques.
  3. Explain how the neck contributes to the sound production of the maracas.

Entry Behaviour

Pupils should already be familiar with the concept of musical instruments and the parts that make up a maraca from previous lessons. They should have engaged in discussions about the sounds produced by various instruments.

Instructional Materials

  1. Materials for the neck of the maracas (e.g., sturdy cardboard or wood, scissors).
  2. Decorative items (e.g., paint, markers, ribbons) to personalize their maracas.

Making Maracas I: Creating the Neck of the Maracas

Making maracas is a fun and creative project that allows us to explore sound while using our hands to create musical instruments. In this first part of the maracas-making process, we will focus on creating the neck of the maracas, which is an important part of this instrument.

1. Understanding the Maracas

Maracas are percussion instruments that make sound when shaken. They usually consist of a hollow body that is filled with small items (like beads or seeds) to create noise, and a long neck for holding.

2. Gathering Materials

To create the neck of the maracas, we will need the following materials:

  • A sturdy stick or wooden dowel: This will be the neck of the maracas.
  • A plastic or paper cup: This will serve as the body of the maracas.
  • Glue: To attach the neck to the body.
  • Decorative materials (optional): Paint, markers, or stickers to decorate our maracas later.

3. Creating the Neck

Here are the steps to create the neck of the maracas:

Step 1: Prepare the Stick

  • Take your sturdy stick or wooden dowel and ensure it is about 6-8 inches long. This length will make it easy to hold and shake.

Step 2: Attach the Neck

  • Use glue to securely attach one end of the stick to the inside bottom of the plastic or paper cup. Make sure it is centered so that the maracas will balance well when held.

Step 3: Let It Dry

  • Allow the glue to dry completely. This is important because we want the neck to be strong and not come apart when we shake the maracas.

4. Testing the Neck

Once the glue is dry, gently hold the stick and shake the cup to test the connection. The neck should feel secure, and you should be able to shake the maracas without it falling apart.

Lesson Presentation (Step-by-Step Procedure)

Step 1: Introduction
Begin the lesson by asking pupils what they remember about maracas and how they are played. Engage them with a short video or sound clip of maracas being played to stimulate interest.

Step 2: Explanation
Explain the specific materials needed for the neck of the maracas and the purpose of each component. Discuss the importance of having a sturdy neck for producing good sound and for ease of use.

Step 3: Demonstration
Demonstrate how to cut and shape the materials for the neck of the maracas. Show pupils how to securely attach the neck to the main body of the maracas using glue or tape, ensuring that they understand the safety measures when using scissors.

Step 4: Guided Practice
Assist pupils as they begin creating the neck of their maracas. Walk around the classroom to provide guidance, answer questions, and ensure they are following the steps correctly.

Step 5: Independent Practice
Allow pupils time to work independently on finishing the neck of their maracas. Encourage them to focus on ensuring that their neck is secure and able to withstand movement.

Step 6: Feedback
After they finish, ask pupils to show their work and share any challenges they faced. Provide constructive feedback on their construction techniques and encourage peer feedback as well.

Evaluation

Formative Assessment:
Observe pupils during the activity to assess their understanding of the construction process and their ability to handle materials safely.

Summative Assessment:
At the end of the lesson, have pupils present their necks and explain how they constructed them. Assess their understanding based on their explanations and the functionality of their designs.

Summary/Conclusion

Summarize the key points of the lesson, emphasizing the importance of the neck in maracas and how it contributes to the instrument’s sound. Discuss how this part will be essential for the next steps in making the maracas complete.

Assignment

For homework, ask pupils to write a short reflection on what they learned about making the neck of the maracas. They should describe the materials used, the steps they took, and why the neck is important for sound production in the maracas. Encourage them to illustrate their reflections with drawings of their maracas’ necks.
