How Can You Become a Christian? (Primary One – Christian Religious Studies (CRS) Lesson Note: Third Term, Week Three)

Posted on April 10, 2025April 10, 2025 By Dayo

Week Three

Subject: Christian Religious Studies (CRS)
Class: Primary One
Week of the Second Term: 3rd Week
Topic: How Can You Become a Christian?
Subtopic: Pathways to Christianity, Salvation, Belief in Jesus Christ, and Good Deeds (Romans 10:9, Ephesians 2:8)

Instructional Objectives

At the end of the lesson, pupils should be able to:

  1. Describe what it means to have faith in Jesus as a pathway to becoming a Christian.
  2. Recall Romans 10:9 or Ephesians 2:8, discussing how faith and salvation are connected.
  3. Recognize that good deeds are important for Christians but do not take the place of salvation.

Entry Behaviour

Pupils should know basic ideas about Jesus, such as His kindness, teachings, and importance in Christianity.

Instructional Materials

  1. Holy Bible
  2. Flashcards with key phrases: “Faith in Jesus,” “Salvation,” and “Good Deeds”
  3. Illustrated storybook or poster on the life of Jesus

Content

Pathways to Becoming a Christian:

  1. Salvation through Belief in Jesus: Romans 10:9 teaches that if we confess with our mouths and believe in our hearts that God raised Jesus from the dead, we will be saved. Belief in Jesus is a foundational step to becoming a Christian.
  2. Faith as a Gift from God: Ephesians 2:8 explains that salvation is a gift from God, received through faith and not by our works. God’s love and grace make it possible to be saved.
  3. The Role of Good Deeds: While good deeds show God’s love and kindness, they do not replace faith in Jesus for salvation. Good deeds are actions that help others and please God but come as a result of our faith.

Lesson Presentation (Step-by-Step Procedure)

  • Step 1: Introduction
    • Ask pupils, “What do you think it means to believe in someone?” to help them think about trust and faith.
  • Step 2: Explanation
    • Explain the pathway to Christianity, emphasizing salvation through belief in Jesus and the importance of faith as shown in Romans 10:9 and Ephesians 2:8.
  • Step 3: Demonstration
    • Show flashcards with “Faith,” “Salvation,” and “Good Deeds” while briefly explaining each concept.
  • Step 4: Guided Practice
    • Guide pupils in repeating and discussing each scripture, making sure they understand that faith in Jesus and God’s grace are what brings salvation.
  • Step 5: Independent Practice
    • Have pupils draw a symbol or write a word that reminds them of “faith” or “good deeds.”
  • Step 6: Feedback
    • Review their symbols or words and clarify any misunderstandings about faith, salvation, and the role of good deeds.

Evaluation

  • Formative Assessment: Ask pupils to explain why faith is important in Christianity and how it is different from good deeds.
  • Summative Assessment: Have pupils recount Romans 10:9 or Ephesians 2:8 and discuss what they learned about salvation and belief in Jesus.

Summary/Conclusion

Becoming a Christian involves faith in Jesus and accepting salvation as a gift from God. Good deeds are a way to show God’s love but are not a replacement for faith.

Assignment
