Types of Farm Tools: Digging Tools
Digging tools are essential for breaking and turning the soil, planting seeds, and making the ground ready for farming. These tools are designed to dig, loosen, and move soil so that crops can be planted and grow properly. The most common digging tools on a farm are the hoe and the pickaxe.
1. Hoe
- A hoe is a long-handled tool with a flat blade that is attached to the end. The blade can be rectangular or slightly curved. It is made of metal and is often used for digging and loosening soil.
- Use: The hoe is mainly used for breaking up the soil and preparing it for planting. It helps in turning the soil, removing weeds, and creating furrows (small trenches) where seeds can be planted. Farmers also use the hoe to level the ground and make it smooth for planting crops like maize, beans, or vegetables.
2. Pickaxe
- The pickaxe is a heavy, long-handled tool with a sharp pointed end at one side and a flat blade at the other. It is made of metal and is designed for digging hard soil or rocky ground.
- Use: A pickaxe is used for digging tough, hard soil or breaking rocks and large clumps of earth. It is especially useful when the ground is too hard for a hoe to be effective. Farmers use the pickaxe to create holes for planting trees or to break through compacted soil, making it easier to dig and plant crops.
Lesson Presentation
Step 1: Introduction
Ask pupils: “What do farmers use to dig the soil when planting crops? Have you seen someone use a hoe or a pickaxe?”
Show a picture of a hoe to engage the pupils.
Step 2: Explanation
- Explain what digging tools are and their importance in farming.
- Describe the hoe and pickaxe, including their structure and uses.
Example: “A hoe has a blade that can dig and shape soil, while a pickaxe is strong enough to break hard ground.”
Step 3: Demonstration
- Display a real hoe and pickaxe or use pictures.
- Show how the tools are used for digging and making ridges.
Step 4: Guided Practice
- Allow pupils to hold the tools (without using them) under supervision.
- Guide them in identifying and describing the tools.
Step 5: Independent Practice
- Pupils draw one digging tool in their notebooks.
- Write one sentence describing the use of a hoe and a pickaxe.
Step 6: Feedback
- Review pupils’ work and clarify any misunderstandings.
- Praise their efforts in completing the activities.
Evaluation
Formative Assessment:
- Oral questions:
- Name two examples of digging tools.
- What is the main use of a hoe?
- Describe the structure of a pickaxe.
Summative Assessment:
- Written task: List two digging tools and state one use for each.
Summary/Conclusion
- Digging tools are essential for preparing farmland.
- Examples include the hoe and pickaxe, which help turn and break soil.
- Always handle tools with care to ensure safety.
Assignment
- Draw and label a hoe and a pickaxe.
- Write two sentences explaining how farmers use these tools.
