Types of Farm Tools: Cutting Tools

Cutting tools are essential for farm work, especially for harvesting crops, clearing bushes, and maintaining the farm. These tools have sharp edges that allow farmers to cut plants, trees, and other materials. The most common cutting tools on a farm are the cutlass, axe, and sickle.

 1. Cutlass

  •  A cutlass is a long, curved blade with a handle. It is usually made of metal and is sharp on the edges.
  • Use: The cutlass is primarily used for cutting grasses, weeds, and small branches. It is also used to harvest crops like cassava, yams, and sugarcane. Farmers can use the cutlass to clear the farm and make space for planting new crops.

2. Axe

  • The axe is a tool with a heavy, sharp blade attached to a long handle. The blade is typically wider and heavier than the cutlass, making it ideal for cutting larger trees.
  • Use: An axe is used for chopping down trees, cutting large branches, and breaking down big logs. It is also used to clear the farm of large tree stumps or fallen trees that may be in the way.

3. Sickle

  • A sickle is a small, curved tool with a short handle. The blade is very sharp and is designed to cut plants close to the ground.
  • Use: The sickle is used for harvesting crops such as rice, millet, and wheat. It can also be used for cutting grass or small plants. The sickle’s curved blade makes it easy to cut through plants efficiently, especially when they are close to the ground.

Lesson Presentation

Step 1: Introduction

Ask pupils: “Have you ever seen a farmer using tools to cut down grass or branches? What tools were they using?”
Show a real cutlass or picture to capture interest.

Step 2: Explanation

  • Explain what cutting tools are and their importance in farming.
  • Highlight the examples (cutlass, axe, sickle) and describe their uses.
Example: “A cutlass is a common tool used to clear bushes or cut weeds.”

Step 3: Demonstration

  • Show the real cutting tools or their pictures.
  • Demonstrate how to safely hold and use a cutlass for cutting grass.
  • Emphasize safety, such as holding the sharp edge away from the body.

Step 4: Guided Practice

  • Allow pupils to handle the tools (without using them) under close supervision.
  • Guide them in identifying the tools and describing their uses.

Step 5: Independent Practice

  • Pupils sketch one cutting tool in their notebooks and label its parts.
  • Write one use for each cutting tool (cutlass, axe, sickle).

Step 6: Feedback

  • Review pupils’ sketches and descriptions.
  • Correct any misconceptions and praise their efforts.

Evaluation

Formative Assessment:

  • Oral questions:
    1. Name three examples of cutting tools.
    2. What is a cutlass used for?
  • Observe pupils during practice to ensure understanding.

Summative Assessment:

  • Written task: List two cutting tools and state one use for each.

Summary/Conclusion

  • Cutting tools are essential for clearing land and harvesting crops.
  • Examples include cutlass, axe, and sickle.
  • Always use cutting tools safely to avoid injury.

Assignment

  • Draw and label two cutting tools.
  • Write two sentences explaining the importance of cutting tools on a farm.
