Competent teachers are the most critical factor in improving student achievement and closing the achievement gap. Research has shown that the quality of teaching has the greatest impact on student learning, yet most schools fail to define what constitutes good teaching. This lack of definition can hinder teachers’ opportunities for professional growth and development, ultimately negatively impacting student achievement.
This study aimed to address this issue by assessing teachers’ competence in secondary schools, examining the factors that influence their competence, and investigating students’ perceptions of teacher leadership style and its impact on academic performance. The study was conducted in five selected secondary schools in the Ikeja Local Government Area of Lagos State, with a random sample of 40 teachers selected from these schools.
The findings of the study highlight the importance of supporting teachers in their professional development to meet the evolving trends in education. It emphasizes that teachers should not be left alone in the education process and recommends retraining programs to enhance their competence and effectiveness in the classroom. By prioritizing teacher competence and development, schools can create a more supportive and effective learning environment, ultimately leading to improved student achievement and a reduced achievement gap.
