Lesson Plan for Primary Three (Age 8)

Subject: Civic Education
Class: Primary Three
Week of the First Term: 8th Week
Topic: Democratic Practices
Sub-Topic: Meaning of Democracy and Democratic Practices (Registration, Campaign)

Instructional Objectives: At the end of the lesson, pupils should be able to:

  1. Define democracy and explain its importance in decision-making.
  2. Describe the process of voter registration and its significance.
  3. Identify and list two examples of activities involved in a democratic campaign.

Entry Behaviour: Pupils should already understand the basic concepts of rules and decision-making within their school and community. They should also have some awareness of voting or making choices collectively.

Instructional Materials:

  1. Textbook: Civic Education for Primary Schools Book 1 by G. M. Babalola.
  2. Visual aids: Charts showing the steps of voter registration, images of campaign activities (e.g., posters, speeches).
  3. Flashcards: Key terms related to democracy (e.g., vote, election).

Reference Materials (APA 7th edition): Babalola, G. M. (2016). Civic education for primary schools book 1. Lagos: Metropolitan Publishers.

Content: Democracy is a system where people have a say in decisions that affect them. It allows individuals to vote for leaders and participate in making choices for their community or country.

  • Voter Registration: Before voting, people must register their names and details to be eligible to vote.
  • Campaign Activities: During elections, candidates promote themselves through activities like making speeches and putting up posters to convince people to vote for them.

Understanding these practices helps us see how everyone’s voice counts in making decisions that affect our lives.
