Instructional Objectives

At the end of the lesson, pupils should be able to:

  1. Define computer hardware and explain its importance in a computer system.
  2. Identify and describe at least three main components of computer hardware.
  3. Demonstrate how to recognize different computer hardware parts through a practical activity.

Entry Behaviour

Pupils should already know the basic functions of a computer and have been introduced to the concept of technology in their daily lives.

Definition of Computer Hardware

Computer Hardware refers to the physical parts of a computer system that you can see and touch. These parts are essential for the computer to function. Without hardware, a computer cannot perform any tasks or run software programs. Examples of computer hardware include the monitor, keyboard, mouse, and the internal components like the motherboard, processor, and hard drive.

Explanation of Hardware Components

  1. Monitor:
    • The monitor is the screen that displays information and images from the computer. It allows users to see what they are doing on the computer, such as viewing documents, playing games, or watching videos.
  2. Keyboard:
    • The keyboard is a device that allows users to input text and commands into the computer. It consists of keys for letters, numbers, and special functions. The keyboard is essential for typing documents, entering data, and navigating software.
  3. Mouse:
    • The mouse is a pointing device that lets users interact with the computer’s graphical user interface (GUI). It typically has two buttons and a scroll wheel, allowing users to click, drag, and scroll through content on the screen.
  4. Motherboard:
    • The motherboard is the main circuit board inside the computer. It connects all the hardware components, allowing them to communicate with each other. The processor and memory are mounted on the motherboard.
  5. Processor (CPU):
    • The processor, also known as the central processing unit (CPU), is the brain of the computer. It performs calculations and processes instructions, making it crucial for running programs and applications.
  6. Hard Drive:
    • The hard drive is where the computer stores data permanently. It holds the operating system, software applications, and personal files, such as documents, photos, and music.
  7. Power Supply Unit (PSU):
    • The power supply unit converts electricity from the outlet into usable power for the computer components. It supplies the necessary voltage and current to the motherboard and other hardware.
  8. Graphics Card:
    • The graphics card (or video card) is responsible for rendering images and videos. It enhances the computer’s ability to display graphics-intensive applications like games and design software.

Identifying Computer Hardware from Parts

To identify computer hardware from various parts, it’s important to recognize the functions and appearances of each component. Here are some tips:

  1. Look for Labels:
Most hardware components have labels or markings that indicate what they are. For example, the monitor will have a brand logo, and the keyboard will have key labels.
  2. Physical Characteristics:
    • The monitor is typically a flat panel or older-style box that connects to the computer.
    • The keyboard has keys arranged in rows, while the mouse usually has buttons and a scroll wheel.
    • The motherboard is a large circuit board with various slots and connectors.
  3. Functionality:
    • If you see something that inputs commands (like the keyboard or mouse), it’s an input device.
    • If it displays information (like the monitor), it’s an output device.
    • Internal components like the processor and hard drive are housed within the computer case and can often be identified when the case is opened.
