Combining Vowels and Consonants (Kindergarten 1- Literacy Lesson Note: First Term, Week Six)

Posted on October 18, 2024October 18, 2024 By Damilola

Week Six: Adding Vowel Sounds with Consonants (a to g) to Make Unconventional Words

Age Group: 4 years old
Week 6: Combining Vowels and Consonants
Objective: To help children combine vowel sounds with consonants (from A to G) to form unconventional or playful words. The focus is on blending vowel and consonant sounds.

Materials Needed:

  • Flashcards with vowels (a, e, i, o, u)
  • Flashcards with consonants (a, b, c, d, e, f, g)
  • Whiteboard and markers
  • Picture cards of common objects starting with consonants from A to G
  • Worksheet for tracing and blending vowel and consonant sounds

Introduction (5 minutes):

  1. Review of Vowel Sounds:
    • Begin by reviewing the five vowel sounds (a, e, i, o, u). Ask children to repeat the sounds after you.
    • Remind them that vowels are important sounds that can be combined with other letters to form words.
  2. Introducing Consonants:
    • Introduce the consonants a to g (focus on the sounds of b, c, d, f, g for blending). Use the flashcards to show these letters and say their sounds aloud:
      • “This is the letter b, and it sounds like /b/.”
      • “This is the letter c, and it sounds like /k/,” and so on.

Lesson Development (15 minutes):

  1. Blending Vowels and Consonants:
    • Explain that vowels and consonants can come together to make new sounds, and sometimes we can make fun, unconventional words by blending them.
    • Use flashcards or the whiteboard to demonstrate examples of blending vowel sounds with consonants. For example:
      • ba, be, bi, bo, bu
      • ca, ce, ci, co, cu
      • da, de, di, do, du
  2. Unconventional Words:
    • Let the children experiment by combining vowels with consonants to form “silly” or playful words, such as:
      • ba, ge, fo, ci
      • Make it clear that some of these are not real words but fun sounds.
