Classification of Rocks Based on Color, Shape, and Hardness (Primary Five – Basic Science Lesson Note: Third Term, Week Two)

Posted on April 14, 2025April 14, 2025 By Dayo

Week Two

Subject: Basic Science
Week of Third Term: 2nd Term
Class: Primary Five
Topic: Rocks
Subtopic: Classification of Rocks Based on Color, Shape, and Hardness

Objectives

At the end of the lesson, pupils should be able to:

  1. Classify rocks based on their color, shapes, and hardness.
  2. Identify common features of different rocks through observation.
  3. Group rocks into categories by handling and analyzing their physical characteristics.

Entry Behaviour

Pupils should already know the meaning of rocks and the three main types of rocks (Igneous, Metamorphic, Sedimentary).

Instructional Materials

  1. Various rock samples (smooth, rough, soft, hard)
  2. Charts showing images of rocks with their classifications
  3. Flashcards with descriptions of rock properties (color, shape, hardness)

Reference Materials

  1. Ijiyemi, C. (2016). Foundations of Science and Technology for Primary School Book 5. Lagos: Metropolitan Publishers.
  2. Oyinlola, M., Rahaman, B., & Ezeume, I. (2015). Basic Science and Technology for Primary School Book 5 (BEC Edition). Lagos: Spectrum Book Limited.

Objectives

At the end of the lesson, pupils should be able to:

  1. Classify rocks based on their color, shape, and hardness.
  2. Identify different types of rocks by their characteristics.
  3. Understand how to compare rocks using simple tools like touch and sight.

Entry Behaviour

Pupils should have an understanding of basic properties like color and shape of objects from previous lessons in science, art, or nature.

Instructional Materials

  1. Various rock samples with different colors, shapes, and sizes.
  2. Magnifying glass for close-up observation.
  3. A hardness testing tool (e.g., a simple nail or glass plate).
  4. Chart showing examples of rock types categorized by color, shape, and hardness.

Classification of Rock

Rocks can be grouped based on three main features:

Classification Based on Color

  • Rocks come in many different colors like black, gray, white, red, brown, and even green.
  • Some rocks are light-colored, while others are dark-colored.
  • For example, granite is usually light-colored, while basalt is dark-colored.

Classification Based on Shape

  • Rocks also come in many shapes. Some rocks are smooth, while others are rough.
  • Some rocks have sharp edges, while others are round.
  • Igneous rocks, like basalt, tend to have a rough shape, while sedimentary rocks, like sandstone, can be more rounded because they are made of smaller pieces that have been pressed together.

Classification Based on Hardness

  • Hardness is how strong or tough a rock is. Some rocks are soft and can be scratched easily, while others are hard and very difficult to scratch.
  • We can test the hardness of rocks by trying to scratch them with something harder. For example, chalk is soft and can be scratched easily, while diamond is very hard and cannot be scratched easily.
  • Limestone is soft and can be scratched with a fingernail, while granite is hard and difficult to scratch.

Lesson Presentation

Step 1: Introduction
Engage pupils with a question: “Have you ever picked up a rock? What did it look or feel like?” Show them a variety of rocks and ask them to describe the differences they see.

Step 2: Explanation
Explain that rocks can be grouped based on their color, shape, and hardness. Use simple examples and point to the displayed rock samples.

Step 3: Demonstration
Show pupils how to classify rocks:

  • Use visual aids to highlight colors and shapes.
  • Demonstrate the hardness test by trying to scratch different rocks with a coin or nail.

Step 4: Guided Practice
Divide pupils into groups and give each group a set of rock samples. Ask them to classify the rocks by color, shape, and hardness, using the flashcards for guidance.

Step 5: Independent Practice
Provide individual pupils with a rock sample and ask them to write down its color, shape, and hardness based on their observations.

Step 6: Feedback
Review pupils’ classifications, addressing misconceptions and reinforcing correct groupings.

Evaluation

Formative Assessment:

  • Observe pupils during group activities to ensure they classify rocks correctly.
  • Ask pupils oral questions about the features they observe.

Summative Assessment:

  • Provide a worksheet with images of rocks. Ask pupils to classify each rock by color, shape, and hardness.

Summary/Conclusion

Reiterate the three main criteria for classifying rocks: color, shape, and hardness. Emphasize how these features help us identify and group rocks effectively.

Assignment

Find three rocks around your home or school. Write down their colors, describe their shapes, and test their hardness by scratching them with a coin or nail.
