
This study investigates into the diplomatic relations between Nigeria and the United States during the period from 1975 to 1979, focusing on the policies pursued under the leadership of General Murtala Ramat Mohammed and General Olusegun Obasanjo. During this time, Nigeria’s foreign policy underwent significant shifts, particularly in its stance on Africa as the centerpiece of its diplomatic efforts and its confrontational approach towards Western powers, notably the United States. The study aims to provide a detailed background to Nigeria-US relations, review Nigeria’s role in African affairs, examine the impact of Nigeria’s confrontational policy, and analyze Obasanjo’s policy of partnership with the Carter administration. Through a review of relevant literature and analysis of primary and secondary sources, this study seeks to shed light on the dynamics and significance of Nigeria’s diplomatic engagements with the United States during this pivotal period in its history.
