Basic Skills in Swimming
Swimming is a fun and important skill that helps us stay safe in the water. Here are some basic swimming skills:
- Floating: Learning to float on your back helps you relax and stay safe in the water. It’s important to stay calm and trust the water to hold you up.
- Kicking: Kicking helps propel you through the water. Practicing kicking while holding onto the side of the pool or using a kickboard is a great way to build strength.
- Breathing: Learning to breathe properly while swimming is essential. Practice inhaling through the mouth when your head is out of the water and exhaling through the nose when your head is in the water.
Lesson Presentation (Step-by-Step Procedure)
Step 1: Introduction
Start the lesson with a fun story about swimming adventures. Ask pupils if they have ever been swimming and what they enjoyed about it.
Step 2: Explanation
Introduce the basic skills of swimming. Explain each skill using simple language and visual aids. Highlight the importance of each skill for safety and enjoyment in the water.
Step 3: Demonstration
Demonstrate each skill in the water. Show how to float, kick, and breathe properly while swimming. Use a swimming noodle to assist with floating and kicking.
Step 4: Guided Practice
Have pupils practice floating on their backs with support from a teacher or pool edge. Then, allow them to practice kicking using kickboards while you supervise.
Step 5: Independent Practice
Encourage pupils to try floating and kicking independently in shallow water, with close supervision. Remind them to stay calm and use the techniques learned.
Step 6: Feedback
Observe pupils as they practice. Provide constructive feedback, encouraging those who may be struggling and praising those who demonstrate good technique.
Evaluation
Formative Assessment:
Assess pupils’ understanding during practice by observing their ability to float and kick. Ask questions to reinforce their knowledge of the skills.
Summative Assessment:
At the end of the lesson, have pupils explain one basic swimming skill they learned and demonstrate it in the water.
Summary/Conclusion
Summarize the basic swimming skills discussed in the lesson. Reinforce the importance of practicing these skills for safety and enjoyment in water.
Assignment
Ask pupils to practice the floating and kicking skills at home (if they have access to a safe water area) or share what they learned with a family member. They should come prepared to share their experiences in the next class.
