Week of the First Term: 1st Week
Topic: Living Things
Sub-Topic: Meaning and Living Things in the School Environment

Instructional Objectives:

  1. Identify at least three examples of living things in the school environment.
  2. Describe one characteristic that distinguishes living things from non-living things.
  3. Demonstrate care and respect for living things in the school environment.

Entry Behaviour:
Pupils should recognize basic differences between objects that are alive and those that are not, such as plants, animals, and objects.

Instructional Materials:

  1. Textbook: Basic Science and Technology Primary Bk 1
  2. Visual aids: Pictures of plants, animals, and non-living objects
  3. Flashcards: Showing characteristics of living things

Living things are creatures that can grow, move, eat, and breathe.

Lesson Presentation (Step-by-Step Procedure)

Step 1: Introduction
Engage pupils with a story about plants or animals in the school environment.

Step 2: Explanation
Explain what living things are using simple language and examples. Discuss characteristics like growth, reproduction, and response to stimuli.

Step 3: Demonstration
Show pictures of different living things and ask pupils to identify them. Explain their characteristics.

Step 4: Guided Practice
Take pupils on a short walk around the school to observe living things. Guide them in identifying and discussing what they see.

Step 5: Independent Practice
Give each pupil a worksheet with pictures of living and non-living things. Ask them to circle the living things and write down one characteristic of each.

Step 6: Feedback
Review pupils’ worksheets, provide feedback, and clarify any misconceptions.
