Week Eight
Subject: Basic Science
Class: Primary One
Week of the Third Term: 8th Week
Topic: Parts of a Computer
Subtopic: Basic Computer Parts (Mouse, Monitor, Keyboard), Functions of Each Part
Objectives
At the end of the lesson, pupils should be able to:
- Identify the three basic parts of a computer: mouse, monitor, and keyboard.
- Explain the function of each part in simple terms.
- Demonstrate how to use each part (clicking the mouse, typing on the keyboard).
Entry Behaviour
Pupils should already have a basic understanding of what a computer is and may have seen or used one before.
Instructional Materials
- A real computer (or a computer model) with a visible mouse, monitor, and keyboard.
- Visual aids (posters showing the parts of a computer and their functions).
- Flashcards with pictures of each part and its function.

Content
Basic Computer Parts
Computers consist of several parts that work together to perform tasks. The three basic parts are:
1. Mouse
- The mouse is a small device we hold in our hand and move on a flat surface.
- Function: It helps us point, click, and select things on the computer screen. When we move the mouse, the arrow on the screen moves too!
2. Monitor
- The monitor is the screen of the computer. It looks like a TV.
- Function: It shows us everything we do on the computer, like pictures, videos, and games. We can see our work and play fun games on it!
3. Keyboard
- The keyboard is a board with many buttons called keys.
- Function: We use the keyboard to type letters, numbers, and symbols. It helps us write messages, search for information, and play games.
Lesson Presentation
Step 1: Introduction
Begin the lesson by asking, “Who can tell me what a computer has?” Encourage pupils to share what they know about computer parts. Introduce the topic of the lesson.
Step 2: Explanation
Explain each part of the computer (mouse, monitor, keyboard) and its function using simple language. Use visual aids to illustrate the explanations.
Step 3: Demonstration
Show the pupils the actual parts of the computer. Demonstrate how to use the mouse (clicking and moving) and how to type on the keyboard. Turn on the monitor to show them how it displays information.
Step 4: Guided Practice
Engage pupils in identifying each part of the computer on the demonstration unit. Ask them to practice moving the mouse and clicking on items (if feasible) or simulating typing on an imaginary keyboard.
Step 5: Independent Practice
Provide flashcards of the computer parts and ask pupils to match each part with its function. For example, match a picture of a mouse with its function of moving the pointer.
Step 6: Feedback
Ask pupils to share what they learned about the parts of the computer. Provide feedback, correct any misunderstandings, and reinforce the functions of each part.
Evaluation
- Formative Assessment: Observe pupils during guided practice and independent practice to ensure they can identify the parts and understand their functions.
- Summative Assessment: At the end of the lesson, ask pupils to name each part of the computer and its function verbally.
Summary/Conclusion
Summarize the lesson by reviewing the three basic parts of a computer (mouse, monitor, keyboard) and their functions. Reinforce the importance of each part in using a computer effectively.
Assignment
Draw a picture of a computer and label its parts (mouse, monitor, keyboard). Write one sentence about what you can do with each part (e.g., “I use the mouse to click on things.”).
