Class: Age 3
Subject: Montessori
Topic: Arranging the Pink Tower & Exploring Pleasant and Unpleasant Smells

General Objectives

By the end of the lesson, pupils should be able to:

  1. Arrange the Pink Tower blocks from largest to smallest.
  2. Differentiate between pleasant and unpleasant smells using the Montessori smelling jars.

Materials

  1. Montessori Pink Tower blocks.
  2. Montessori smelling jars (containing pleasant scents like flowers and fruit, and unpleasant scents like vinegar and garlic).
  3. Mat for arranging the Pink Tower.

Previous Knowledge

Pupils have been introduced to size differentiation with knobbed and knobless cylinders and have explored sensory smells using smelling jars.

Lesson Procedure

Introduction

  • Objective: Introduce the pupils to the concept of arranging objects by size and reinforce their ability to identify different smells.
  • Method:
    • Present the Pink Tower and discuss the importance of size, from large to small.
    • Reintroduce the smelling jars, emphasizing pleasant and unpleasant smells.

Step 1: Introduction to the Pink Tower

  • Objective: Help pupils understand how to arrange objects by size.
  • Method:
    1. Show the Pink Tower to the class.
    2. Explain that it consists of 10 blocks, and we will arrange them from the largest to the smallest.
    3. Demonstrate by placing the largest block at the bottom and progressively stacking the smaller blocks on top.
    4. Allow pupils to touch the blocks, feel the differences in size, and observe how the tower is formed.
