This study explores the role of adult education as an agent for social change in Nigeria, with a focus on Lagos State. It examines the impact of adult education programs on societal development and addresses the challenges faced by such programs in the Nigerian context. The research distinguishes between adult education for working adults and adult education as a course of study in universities, focusing specifically on adult education for working adults in Lagos State. Utilizing a descriptive survey design, the study targets adult students enrolled in various courses at Lagos State University. Data is collected through a questionnaire, the “Adult Education and Social Change Scale (AESCA)”, which underwent validation by experts in the field. The questionnaire includes demographic information and items related to the research hypotheses. A sample of 200 adult students, comprising both males and females, is randomly selected using a simple random sampling technique. Data analysis involves aggregating responses and conducting simple percentage statistical analysis to measure the effect of adult education on social change. The study aims to ascertain the impact of adult literacy programs on social change, the development of practical skills among participants, the utilization of acquired skills in securing employment and becoming self-reliant, and the contribution of adult education programs to effecting change in the environment. The findings of this research are expected to contribute empirical evidence to schools, educators, policymakers, and adult students regarding the nature and importance of adult education in Nigeria. Additionally, the study offers a reference for future research in related areas and provides recommendations for linking adult education to national development.
