The emotional well-being of working mothers and its impact on child-rearing practices have garnered increasing attention in recent research. Studies suggest a significant prevalence of emotional distress among working women, particularly during the child-rearing years, with maternal depression posing unique challenges to both mothers and their children (Ukoji et al., 2022; Comfort et al., 2023). Despite the interconnectedness of career and child-rearing domains, there remains a gap in understanding the psychosocial and cognitive effects of mothers’ careers on children’s development. While previous research has explored factors such as parental educational background and socio-economic status, there is a need to delve deeper into the emotional adjustment and cognitive development aspects of career-child rearing interface (Oyedele et al., 2023). Thus, this study aims to investigate the relationship between mothers’ careers and child-rearing practices in the South Senatorial District of Edo State, Nigeria, focusing specifically on psychosocial behavior, emotional adjustment, and cognitive development in children.

Through a series of research questions and hypotheses, this study seeks to elucidate the intricate dynamics between mothers’ careers and various dimensions of child development. By examining the direct effects of mothers’ careers on child rearing, psychosocial behavior, emotional adjustment, and cognitive development, this research endeavors to provide valuable insights for working mothers and their families. The findings aim to empower working mothers to navigate career-child rearing conflicts effectively, thereby enhancing their performance in the workplace and promoting satisfaction in their home environments. Additionally, this study serves as a reference point for families grappling with similar challenges, offering strategies to manage role conflicts and foster harmonious relationships amidst the demands of career and child rearing.
