TEACHERS’ USE OF AUDIO VISUAL AIDS AND ITS EFFECTS ON THE ACADEMIC PERFORMANCE OF PUPILS IN IBADAN METROPOLIS

PROPOSAL

Research on teaching, teaching methods, teaching materials, audio-visual aids and learning by the pupils has for long been of interest to educationists. Some studies (i.e Adufe, 2008; Adepoju, 2006) have been carried out on certain aspects of the use of audio-visuals in teaching but have not investigated how it affects the academic performance of pupils in primary level of education.

Research evidence shows that the challenges confronting primary school teachers are basically on the methods of imparting the knowledge. It was argued by Adufe (2008) that teaching is based on methods which at the long run bring about effective learning.

Teaching, according to Oladipo and Ayeni (2000) involves bringing about or at least facilitating desirable changes in learners. However, effective teaching requires the teacher to step out of the realm of personal experience and step into the world of the learners.  It is the learner who must be engaged for learning to occur, the learner is the one who must take the commitment to learn.

Research evidence shows that the major problem in primary schools is the method of imparting knowledge. To this Adepoju (2006), revealed that the difficulties pupils encounter when they are receiving instruction is basically linked to poor usage of audio-visual aids. This is also confirmed as the study carried out by Rasual (2011) revealed that the method employed in using audio-visual tools in most of our public primary schools is inadequate or not effective.

Audio visual aids help to relate the general concept to  actual reality.  Words are often  inadequate  in communicating  information  or  images  of things  of which the pupils  has  no direct  experience.  A model, picture, or a sketch can make the concept clear understandable.

Audio visual aids are those devices which are used in classrooms to encourage teaching learning process and make it easier and interesting. Audio -visual aids are the best tool for making teaching effective and the best dissemination of knowledge (Rasula,  Bukhshb & Batool, 2011). The main types of audio-visual teaching aids are as under:  Visual teaching aids;  Audio teaching aids; and Audio-visual teaching aids. Proper use of all of these enhances the academic performance of pupils.

Hence, this study seeks to investigate teachers’ use of audio-visual media on puils academic performance using some selected schools in Ibadan metropolis, an area of Oyo State as case study.
